Community Safe Room Opens Its Doors

On July 13th, 2018, Willacy County officially opened the doors to the long awaited Community Safe Room with a ribbon cutting ceremony.  The Safe Room is designed to keep a few hundred residents safe in the event of a major hurricane, tornado outbreak or extreme weather event.  The Safe Room is impact resistant and can sustain winds up to 200mph (3-second gust).  The Willacy County Housing Authority, where the building is located, will maintain the building and also use the Safe Room offices to run the day to day operations of the housing authority.  The County Judge, Aurelio Guerra, pushed forward to clear many obstacles and together with the director of the housing authority, Jaime Serna, the Community Safe Room will be a lasting achievement for the community of Willacy.  NM Contracting along with Guzman & Munoz Engineering completed the project.
